Special Edition Sunday Love (Sunday Love 2)

Hey ALL!!!

This is a Special Edition of the Sunday-of-Love e-mail, in honor of those members of the Spirit who put together the best team Hoedown in the history of Spirit & Fan Patrol!

(Spirit members, FYI, the Sunday e-mails are a still-fledgling tradition of effusive and lengthy e-mails which I send out on Sunday evenings, mostly to talk about college football, give some props out for the week, and to give me something to do while my abs recover from Katie's beating on them)

FIRST OFF, a HUGE, BIG SHOUT OUT to Laura, who not only put together a limo to cart us about to our many stops last night, but also set us up to hero's welcome at the Hi-Brow, and let her apartment serve as a rallying point while the party faithful assembled (complete with pre-party pizza, adult beverages, and the worst collection of vodka mixers since my parents' fridge). But seriously, folks, WAY above and beyond the call for Laura... who was a gracious hostess throughout the evening. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! If you haven't been to either Hi-Brow locations, you should go. L.A. is rapidly losing local watering holes with personality of their own, and a collection of real folks who will sit and talk to you, regardless of what kind of jeans or shoes you have on. In addition, the "Welcome Clippers Girls" homemade sign behind the bar was a Joey-favorite, and a priceless touch. What's more, if it's Friday night, if you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them... wait, no dammit, that's the A-team... No, what I meant to say was, if you're in the 909 and its Friday, rumor has it you may even sidle up to the bar at the Hi-Brow and find yourself getting drinks from Laura herself... but remember to tip well :)

NEXT... SHOUT OUTS to the Spirit, who acquitted themselves quite nicely on the line-dance floor at Montana's. For those of you that haven't been, it's the biggest country bar I've seen in southern California to date, and it was a rockin' good, country time. Led by Laura and Kelley (who were clearly not first-timers at the bar), Whitney, Taylor, Ashely & Lynae all turned out line dance after line dance - and drew quite a crowd in the process. (Don't they always?). Not to be outdone, the FP party faithful represented during the "freestyle" songs, which is what country bars call the "hip hop" portions of the evening. David, Josh, and Joey were all rockin' the dance circle (but I'm pretty sure no one got "served"). Yes, you heard that correctly, Joey was out there dancing... don't worry, I was as shocked as you were... but he handled it - and does, if you ask him nicely, a pretty convincing "Harmony".... The swing and two-step songs were also well attended, and I can personally vouch for Kelley and Whitney as amazing partners... Joey and Taylor also turned some heads during swing songs with a "Rodeo Twist"...

The limo ride home was, well... "eventful", but through no fault of the team members... an angsty limo driver and one friend of a friend who repainted the side of the car (while in transit) made for most if not all of that excitement... but good times nonetheless. A special thank you to Kelley who was kind enough to drive the FP party crew back to their hotel (because the limo driver couldn't find it - apparently proximity to the 10 Freeway doesn't qualify as "easy to get to" any longer) at 3AM and completely out of her way. Needless to say, Kelley drinks free at any FP function she chooses to attend this season. Thank you!

AS FOR FP:

Good practice today, especially as we (much like Jessie's much beloved Bruins) work through some injuries. Hats off to those folks playing hurt... it was hot out there today.

SHOUT OUT TO ARTURO, who kept the rest of the FP guys from walking over the soccer field and beating the hell out of the guys who hit Nina in the head with a soccer ball from about 30 yards away. Oh no, there was no "look out" or "fore" or whatever you're supposed to do in soccer when a hard-driven ball is headed for someone's dome... they just let it curl in and hit poor Nina squarely in the noggin. Nina, I hope you're feeling better... you're a real trooper for sticking out practice after that. Please let us know if there's anything you need.

Arturo with a quick bit of Spanish defused the situation, and it was much appreciated. It's a good lesson for times when people will come right at you - grab, kick and even throw things... you HAVE to keep your cool - gents, even when someone does something to your beloved flier. There is NEVER a good reason to lose it on the court or any time you're on the job for FP - the ushers and "red coats' have our backs, just let them know who's who - and you won't see them again in STAPLES anytime soon. Of course, they probably also have to deal with Jessie - and believe me, you DON'T want to be the guy that threw something at one of our girls when Jessie comes to chat with you :)

DON'T FORGET THE SACRAMENTO TRIP (THAT MEANS YOU, TOO SPIRIT!!!) Game tickets go on sale in mid-October, and if you don't have a plane ticket, we're not going to get you a game ticket to sit with the rest of us... so GET on that!!! If you need the Evite again, let me know. Otherwise, flight info (if you don't want to fly alone) is up on the EVITE responses. Shoot your questions about the event to me!

FINALLY - A little football love... IT WAS A PERFECT FOOTBALL SATURDAY...

UCLA dump-trucked Oregon State...

USC got by U-Dub...

BYU put the hurt on perennial spoiler New Mexico...

NOTRE DAME lost to Purdue and is... an awesomely awful 0-5...

and....

wait for it.... WAIT FOR IT...

NAVY BEAT AIR FORCE FOR THE FIFTH YEAR IN A ROW 31-20!!! Man, I love beatin' the "Chair Force"... BRING ON THE IRISH!

Right, well.... big week to come for everyone... before you know it, the season will be upon us. Looking forward to seeing some of you in Santa Barbara!
